How do you feel when an author begins a new series of novels? How disappointed were Ann Cleeves’ fans when she switched her attention from Jimmy Perez to Vera Stanhope and then to Matthew Venn? I suspect that you continue to read whatever your favourite authors publish, I know I do. We’re all pleased to see that there is another Vera Stanhope coming soon. Many series are extensive: there are, so far, 29 titles in Ian Rankin’s very popular Rebus series; 22 Daziel & Pascoe novels by Reginald Hill and 28 Peter Robinson’s Inspector Banks books. Surprisingly, Colin Dexter only produced 13 titles in the Inspector Morse series plus short stories (but, of course, there were 33 brilliant TV episodes starring John Thaw). I have no intention of abandoning Dr Mills Sanderson, but over the past year I have enjoyed creating the new characters that form the Regional Unsolved Case Unit, led by DI Miriam Abbott. There is a completely different look to the book cover, which is being developed in collaboration with Hester Cox, a talented printmaker from Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Look out for further updates!
